Nicotine Withdrawal

Nicotine withdrawal is quite severe. The severity of the withdrawal in the instance of quitting smoking is greatly increased by the amount of addictive additives in cigarette smoke.

According to a report published in 1994 by the major five American Cigarette Companies there are 599 additives in a common cigarette.

The cigarette additive list is too long to publish here so click this link to see for yourself.

Since many of these additives are addictive chemicals and foods, withdrawal from nicotine is complicated beyond belief. These chemicals have a withdrawal effect as well that increases the failure rate with people who try to give up their smoking habit.

In the past, you may have tried to address your smoking by changing your behavior, like avoiding situations where you might want to smoke or going "cold turkey." But to quit smoking, you need to understand and address smoking from both a behavioral and a physical standpoint.

The unanimous consensus in the field of recovery from any addiction, is that a spiritual admission of powerlessness followed by the removal of any offending addictive substances is required in order to provide an atmosphere for emotional well being. The tapering off method went out with bellbottoms - way back when!

When quitting smoking the best approximation of severity that you have in your head will be better off times 10!

  •  Do Not underestimate the severity of quitting cigarette smoking. (Therapists I know often say it is much more difficult that heroin.)
    •  Take your best guess and times it by ten
  •  Get some experienced help to assist you.
    •  Your doctor may know of local programs or support group
    •  Hypnosis or hypnotherapy is quite effective at changing the conscious decision to stop smoking into a subconscious command to stop. The subconscious is very powerful and will make it happen even with all the addictive items in your body.
      •  Converting a conscious thought into a subconscious thought is a lot like converting an ordinary computer file into an executable file, which is programmed to install on its own.
      •  Personally, I successfully arrested a 100 cigarette a day habit by using 22 sessions of hypnotherapy, never craved anything, took a replacement medication or had a relapse and it has been over 20 years.
  •  Experienced therapists suggest that rather than "quit" it is more effective to "return your consciousness" to the days when you were a non smoker.

Weight gain is usually another issue that contributes to the success of a stopping smoking venture. It is prudent to develop a good eating plan prior to stopping smoking.

Tips For Reducing Nicotine Withdrawal Stresses

  •  Excuse yourself from situations that causes you stress. Walk around the block when your friends are on their smoke break.
    •  A few minutes away can give a different perspective in any situation
  •  Get up after eating and do the dishes - wet hands are a good deterrant.
  •  Call or talk to a supportive friend.
    •  Keep a few phone numbers with you or on your speed dial
  •  Reward yourself with a nice bottle of sparkling water
    •  Cigarettes usually are a big part of the smokers reward system
  •  Do relaxation exercises, Use stress balls, rubber bands or paper clips to let off some steam.
  •  Meditate or pray
  •  Exercise within your health boundaries
  •  Participate in a behavioral support program
  •  Remind yourself: Smoking is Not An Option for Today
    •  It is easier to quit for a day that forever.
  •  Think of a relaxing scene and travel there in your mind.

Patches and nicotine replacement preparations can also assist you with replacing the "nicotine" which will lessen some of the withdrawals . If you have an addiction to pure nicotine, which is almost impossible to have, the withdrawal effects will be much reduced.
